A Study on Women¢¥s Awareness of Skin Beauty Care and Make-Up


Abstract
To investigate the awareness status of skin beauty care and make-up. 1324 women living in big cities were selected randomly and interviewed directly from March 1 to May 30 1994. The result obtained were as followings:

1. In the general characteristics of the subjects studied, the proportion of twenties by age was 37.7%, that of thirties was 28.5%, that of forties was 18.6% and that of fifties was 15.2%. By educational level, the subjects¢¥, were distributed by 41.6% of college graduate, 37.4% of high school, 7.4% of middle school and 5.7% of elemer)taryl school. Of 1324 women, 50.5% was housewife, 31.5% was student, 9.4% was technician and 8.6% was salesman,, By,, social level, the proportion of middle level was 58.2% that of high level was 28.2% and that of lower level was 13.6% and 62.5% of them was married while 37.5% was unmarried. The subjects were selected 49.80/6¢¥ from Seoul, 3216% ¢¥¢¥,from Daegu and 17.6% from Pusan.
2. In the skin health condition of face, the rate of moderate status was 58.8%, that of good was 25.5% and that of poor was 15.6%. Generally, the rate which was involved in good status was the higher at the condition of the better social level, big city, Seoul resident and married(p<0.001).
3. The proportion of dry skin of face was 38.6%, that of neutral skin was 332% and oily skin¢¥ was 19.4%, Among the neutral skin, the rate was the higher in the group of technician, student, high social level and unmarried as 4L9%, 37:8%, 3155%, 37.1% each The rate of dry skin was the higher in house wife(48.6%), salesman(34.5%), middle and lower social level(412¡Æ/460%) and married(453%) than that of other groups(p<0001)
4. The experience rate of skin beauty care was 46.8% of subjects. The high rate by characteristics was 52.6% of twenties, 51.4% of college graduate, 67.5% of salesman, 57.6% of high social level, 513% of unmarried, 52.4% of woman from big city and 50.7% of Daegu resident
5. The proportion of using home-made cosmetics was 50.3%, that of 1 or 2 foreign products was .265%, that of not distinguished between home-made and foreign-made was 21.4% and that of only foreign products was 1.7%. By characteristics, the rate of prefering foreign-made products was the higher in the age of forties, the higher educatirnill level, the better social level, unmarried, and Seoul resident than that of other groups(p<0.001).
6. At the reason of selecting new cosmetics, the rate of following advertisement was 31_1¢¥%, that of s;,k--sinan., inducement was 25.1%, that of depending on prefering brand was 16.7%, that of cheap one as much as possible was 14.1% and that of friend¢¥s advice was 13.0%_ The selection rate by advertisement was the light in the age of twenties and thirties, that by salesman¢¥s advice was the higher in forties, fifties tan that of other groups_ The cheap products were prefered by married, woman from town and the rate by friend¢¥s advice was thee higher in student and unmarried than that of other groups. The subjects in high social level and sales prefered to select cosmetics by brand and woman in middle & lower social level, city resident prefered to select them by salesman¢¥s seducement(p<0,0()1).
7. The major symptoms of side effect caused by cosmetics were 43.0% of itching, 33.1% of red papule, 8.0% of aczema and 1.7% of others. The red papule was 42.0% in twenties, 37.9`/ in technician, 42.2% in student, 4; .5y in unmarried, 42.9% in woman from big city and 50.5% in Rsan resident. Itching sign was 47.1%, 60 % in hous?,cife and salesman each, 48.7% in married, 41.4%, 50.7% in Seoul or Daegu resident(l)<0.001).
8. The proportion of medial center used for side effects of cosmetics was 25_6¡Æ at the dcrmatologic department, 12.6% at the pharmacy, 11.9% at the clinic, 5.3% with the oriental medicine and 36.8% was cured without treatment The natural curing was the higher in the younger age and the hospital using rate decreased to the educational level(p<0.001).
9. At the reasons of side effects, 75.7% of subjects had trouble with skin, 6.3% of them was misused, 5.6% of them used bad cosmetics, 2.2% was because of bad skin and 10.2?% was unknown. The rate of caused by cosmetics was the higher in the fifties, lower educational level and housewife than that of other groups(p<0_001). The rate of caused by trouble with skin was the higher in the younger age, high educational level, student and married¢¥ than that of other groups.
10. The proportion of make-up status was distributed into 38.8% of moderate, 30.2% of faint, 16.9% of very faint, 10.9% of slight dark and 3.2% of very dark.
11. In the proportion of using time for make-up, 61.5% took for 20 rains, 32.9% for 30 rains,¢¥ 5.0% for 30 rains to I hour and 0.2% for 2 hours. The rate of 20 rains was the higher in the older age, the lower social level, housewife, salesman, student and married than that of other groups(p<0.001).
12. The proportion of severe side effect symptoms caused by cosmetics was 43.3% which was the higher in the age of twenties and thirties, the higher educational level, student and technician, the higher social level than that of other groups(p<0.001).
13. The experience rate of face massage was 64.0% which was the higher in the age of thirties and high school graduate(p<0.001).

These results would be useful for woman¢¥s skin beauty care and proper management for their skin health. In order to filll up their need to be the more beautiful women, the more useful educational programs were developed and the information was collected.
